Rabsal's Current Projects

Kham Film Making Training Program
Program Summary
One output of the project will be a digital ethnography of Tibetan culture created by young Tibetans from Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. A training program will be established at Sichuan Province Tibetan Institute (SPTI) and groups of select students will receive eight months training in elementary film-making. They will then travel to villages throughout Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture to create short films about how they would represent their culture to outsiders. The students will be encouraged to interact with their fellow villagers throughout the process. The training program will finish with a semester focusing on film editing.
Another output of the project will be a meta-documentary of the participatory film-making process. Rabsal staff will document the progress of the students’ work over the eight-month period and accompany each group of students in their final assignments, while providing technical and support services. The meta-documentary will be distributed as VCDs/DVDs not only in Tibetan areas but also abroad.
Through this project, the capacity of SPTI will be built and a local trainer trained so that the program could be continued at the school in the future. Thus, the program aims to have an impact on the following areas: cultural representation and regeneration, youth empowerment, multimedia skills training, and institutional capacity building.
